7 REASONS TO START MEDITATING RIGHT NOW

I’m writing this post in April 2020 and right now many of us spend a lot of time at home doing quarantine due to the global COVID-19 outbreak. And thinking about it, this can be the perfect time to start doing all the things that we usually put on hold because “we don’t have enough time.”

If meditation has been on your list of things-to-do for a while, in this post I'm giving you 7 reasons to end procrastinating and start today.

  1. It's free! To do your meditation practice you don't need any special clothing or equipment. Meditation can be practiced sitting on a chair or cross-legged on the floor, using PJs or sweatpants. You don’t need to spend any money on this.

  2. It can be done anywhere. From the bedroom to the yard, any location where you feel comfortable can be your meditation space. Just find a place where you can be free of distractions for a few minutes.

  3. It does not require a large investment of time. Meditation is a personal practice and can be as long or short as you decide, but with only five minutes a day, you can start to notice its benefits.

  4. It can help better manage emotions*. During this time of social distancing and isolation, feelings of loneliness, sadness, or even depression and anxiety may arise. Many scientific studies suggest that mindfulness practices help prevent or improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.

  5. It can help improve relationships. Generally, personal relationships are difficult, but being together 24/7 in a small space can make them even more difficult. Meditation can help us to be more compassionate and aware of others' feelings, which can translate into better personal relationships. Not so bad, if you ask me.

  6. Improves focus. One of the perks of practicing meditation is that it helps to improve concentration, and we can use that in any other area of life. If you are working from home right now, staying focused on your computer and away from the kitchen is a must.

  7. Improves sleep**. Meditation can improve sleep quality and can help fall asleep quicker. Actually, you can find a lot of guided meditations online, like Yoga Nidra, designed specifically to help you sleep.

Talking from my personal experience, meditation is a great way to improve your life in every aspect and the best moment to start building the habit is now.  I know it can be intimidating at the beginning but out there is a great variety of techniques, just try as many as you can until finding the best fit for you. And if yoga is part of your life, meditation is the next level for your practice.
